After the failure of the metaverse, its creator wants to take matters into his own hands

Ever since science fiction author Neal Stephenson coined the concept of metaverse in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash,” several companies have tried to bring it to life. Second Life in the 2000s and more recently Meta, and a string of start-ups. But for now, only a few online video games (Roblox, Fortnite), related to a metaverse, flourish.

For those who idealize a large virtual village, the only worthwhile approach is necessarily open and decentralized, and not in the hands of a single company. A year following announcing the creation of his start-up, Lamina1, the author of SF – since passed by Blue Origin and Magic Leap -, launched his blockchain in June. It must be a technical framework of an open metaverse on which overlays are grafted, a bit like Windows with software or iOS with apps.
