After the accumulation of thousands of corpses.. the start of maintenance and rehabilitation of morgues in Khartoum

The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced the start of rehabilitation and maintenance work for a number of morgues in the state of Khartoum As a result of the accumulation of thousands of dead bodies since late 2019.

And she said in a press statement, on Thursday evening, that the Forensic Medicine Authority and the Advisory Council had begun “rehabilitating and maintaining the morgues of Ambada, Bashaer, and Omdurman in Khartoum state, following the morgues had reached a deteriorating state, due to the accumulation of corpses in very large numbers until the smells reeked and the rats devoured them, causing It portends an environmental and health catastrophe.”

Providing refrigerators for storing corpses

It also added that the rehabilitation and rehabilitation operations did not include the transfer, dissection or burial of corpses.

She also explained that the rehabilitation of morgues included providing a number of refrigerators for preserving corpses, preparing anatomy halls, arranging the placement of corpses and placing them in dead bags, in addition to defining them to keep them without decomposing or being eaten by rodents.

The rehabilitation included sorting and shrouding the bodies of newborns, in addition to arranging stores, cleaning external halls, maintaining air conditioners, reviewing lighting, and opening sewers.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Health had recommended in October 2022 to close all morgues Khartoum regarding the accumulation of corpses.

In the context, local media indicate that the morgues of Khartoum have become unable to keep more than 3,000 bodies that have been piling up since late 2019.
