After a possible takeover of Twitter, tech billionaire Elon Musk (50) is considering introducing fees for the online service. “Twitter will always be free for casual users but may cost a little for commercial/government users,” he tweeted Tuesday.
The reactions to Musk’s tweet are mostly negative. Users announce that they will say goodbye to the platform following the billionaire takes over the short message service. Others already fear that distinguishing between private and business profiles for charging will be difficult. For example, what category does a student fall into who spreads memes on Twitter on the side and thus achieves a certain celebrity status, but does not make any money?
Acquisition for 44 billion
Musk wants to take over Twitter and has accused the US short message service of restricting freedom of speech on the platform too much. Musk agreed with Twitter’s board of directors on a deal worth around $44 billion, but is dependent on enough shareholders giving him their shares.
Twitter and Musk plan to complete the acquisition by the end of the year. Since Musk announced the takeover, there has been an uproar in the social media world: Many users fear that Musk will rebuild the short message service according to his own taste following the takeover. (SDA/sfa)
