According to official information, the number of deaths following the severe storms in southern Brazil has risen to at least 41. The government of the state of Rio Grande de Sul announced on Friday evening (local time) that another 46 people were missing. The highest number of victims were in the municipalities of Muçum with 15 and Roca Sales with 10 deaths. According to the government, a total of almost 150,000 people were affected by the storms and almost 3,200 were left homeless.

According to media reports, people have had to be rescued from the roofs of their houses in the flood area northwest of Porto Alegre, the state capital, in recent days. On Saturday, the authorities wanted to distribute medicine and medical supplies in the Taquari River valley. Citizens from other parts of the state also donated so much food, water, clothing, blankets and mattresses that Civil Defense needed reinforcements to receive it all, the government wrote.

It is now winter in the southern hemisphere of the earth. Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost and one of the wealthiest states in Brazil. It has a strong European influence; the first German immigrants settled there in 1824. The current inhabitants are called Gaúchos in Brazil, with an emphasis on the u, in contrast to the Gauchos in Argentina.
