As Žydrūnas Vyčius, project manager of the MK Čiurlionis Art Museum, told BNS this week, the contract with the company providing design services “Aplan” was signed on August 7.
The company undertook to prepare design proposals for the art gallery, technical and management project, obtain a construction permit and supervise the implementation of the project.
According to Z. Vyčius, the technical project for the reconstruction of the gallery must be prepared within ten months.
The contract work is expected to start in the summer of 2025. A separate tender will be announced for them.
The opening of the renovated gallery is tentatively scheduled for 2027.
During the reconstruction, it is planned to install a new main entrance from Independence Square, elevators and elevators for visitors to all floors of the building, thus ensuring the movement needs of people with disabilities and seniors.
It is also planned to expand the gallery spaces by making use of the building’s basement and plinth floor.
In the basement, it is intended to equip new technical rooms, storage rooms, warehouses, on the basement floor – to renovate the lobby, lounge, exhibition and event spaces, educational and creative rooms, storage rooms, bookstore and cloakroom.
On the first floor of the gallery, it is planned to renovate the exhibition spaces, the cafe, repair the halls, storage-restoration workshops, administrative and common rooms, and upgrade the engineering systems.
As announced by the MK Čiurlionis Art Museum, the M. Žilinskas Gallery is the museum’s largest exhibition unit, where a wide range of European and world art is presented.
The gallery was built in 1989 according to the project of architects Eugenijus Miliūnas, Kęstutis Kisielias and Saulius Juškis, in 1991 the sculpture “Man” by Petros Mazūrs was placed next to its entrance. In 2020, the gallery was included in the Register of Cultural Values.
According to the museum, the art gallery of M. Žilinskas has not been substantially maintained since its construction. It is currently closed due to the unfitness of the building to provide public services.
16.5 million The project of adaptation of M. Žilinskas gallery for cultural and public needs, worth EUR, is being carried out from this year until February 2027, it is financed by the funds of the European Union, the state budget and the museum.
