After seven months in office, Anwar Farrán is no longer the Presidential Delegate of Ñuble. The news was announced yesterday followingnoon by the delegation itself through a statement in which it specified that it was a resignation, also announcing the name of the replacement.

“The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security reported this followingnoon that it has accepted the voluntary resignation of Anwar Farrán Veloso as Regional Presidential Delegate of Ñuble. The resignation became effective as of this Monday, July 1,” read the statement, which also added that “the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric Font, expressed his gratitude to Anwar Farrán for his commitment, professionalism, dedication and leadership demonstrated at the head of the Regional Presidential Delegation of Ñuble.”

Reactions arose from both the government and the opposition in the political arena.

“Many thanks to our activist Anwar Farrán for his outstanding work in the Presidential Delegation of Ñuble, and for leaving the values of the Liberal Party in his work and management,” the group wrote on its X account, formerly Twitter.

Opposition MP Frank Sauerbaum spoke out.

“I regret that this is the third presidential delegate to resign in Ñuble, this shows the lack of seriousness with which the Government has faced our reality, the last presidential delegate was very absent, he was unaware of our reality, he was never ratified by the Comptroller’s Office, precisely because he did not meet the residency requirement as we denounced at the time and what is even more serious is that he never had a signature to even face emergencies because administratively he might not respond to serious events such as fires,” said the parliamentarian of Renovación Nacional.

Sauerbaum regretted that “the government takes such an important role so lightly. We hope that whoever takes over will understand our reality and be attentive to the needs of the citizens in the poorest region of the country.”

Difficult arrival

Farrán assumed office on December 1, 2023, following a 20-day vacancy following the departure of his predecessor, Gabriel Pradenas, following almost a year at the head of the Presidential Delegation.

His arrival was immediately opposed by local parliamentarians, who raised their voices over the “outsider” status of the new delegate.

The journalist and former candidate for deputy for Los Angeles was questioned for “contravening the law”, since it requires these authorities to “reside in the region for at least the last two years prior to their appointment” (Art. 124 of the Constitution), despite the fact that at the time the same political sectors did not oppose the arrival of the former governor of Ñuble, Eduardo Durán (RN); or the UDI candidate for the Senate, Jacqueline van Rysselberghe, who did not reside in the region.

“Beyond the capabilities that the new residential delegate may have and the urgency that existed to appoint a person to this position, it is absolutely incomprehensible that the Executive, but specifically President Gabriel Boric, did not opt for someone from the region, with ties to the citizens and who had extensive knowledge of our territory. Here there is clearly a centralist attitude and a lack of commitment to Ñuble,” questioned at that time from the UDI Senator Gustavo Sanhueza, together with deputies Marta Bravo and Cristóbal Martínez.

The Presidential Delegation responded that “all the background information regarding the appointments of authorities goes through the Comptroller’s Office, and there are no objections in this regard. In substance and form, everything is being complied with,” they said.

Regarding the questions regarding his appointment, Farrán responded that “it draws my attention a little, because I, like many other people who come from nearby towns, are victims of centralism. I am a journalist, and I have had to move from my commune to be able to practice my profession. I feel like a very close person and with knowledge not only of Chillán, but of its 21 communes. I understand that this type of comment can occur, but of course, I am here to work, to dialogue, to build bridges, and that is the intention that I have and the mandate that I also have from the President,” he mentioned.
