(CNN) — The UK’s independent data protection regulator said in a statement Thursday that medical information breaches are “rare”, but it is “understandable” that the public may have concerns “given news stories over the past two days”, following reports of an attempted… Employees at “London ClinicAccess to the medical records of the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.

Deputy Commissioner for Regulatory Oversight at the IO, Stephen Bonner, said: “We know that people across the UK are questioning the security of medical records following reports of a data breach at the London Clinic.

He said that although breaches are “rare”, when they do occur, the authority is committed to “getting to the bottom of when, how and why it happened – and how we can prevent it from happening once more”.

Bonner added: “This underscores the need to ensure that this information is handled with the utmost caution and safety. Every patient, regardless of his identity, has the right to privacy.”

The ICO said in a previous statement, on Wednesday, that it had “received a report of the breach and is evaluating the information provided,” following the British newspaper “Daily Mirror” reported that an employee at the London Clinic had tried to access the Princess of Wales’ medical information.

Later on Wednesday, British media reported that up to three employees at the clinic where the Princess of Wales was treated for abdominal surgery were being investigated for allegedly trying to access the princess’s medical records.

Media outlets, including CNN affiliate ITV, also reported that the breach did not include the medical records of King Charles, who was also being treated at the same medical facility for an enlarged prostate. He was later diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer.
