With her victory at the Ironman Lanzarote 2021, the Danish Michelle Vesterby qualified for the Ironman World Championship, which was postponed from October 2021 from Hawaii to May 2022 to St. George (Utah). Due to her pregnancy, she was unable to take advantage of this slot. As the 39-year-old now announced on Instagram, her slot was transferred to the Ironman World Championship this year.

“Got my ticket confirmed. What a relief – thanks, Ironman! This is a big step for women in sports. That means less worry and less stress and more time and energy to focus on being the best athlete and mom at the same time. It gives the new moms the opportunity and time to return to sport in a safer and less stressful way. Having the time to get back in shape properly and not forcing anything by overtraining,” she wrote.

Vesterby already gave birth to a son in May 2019, and her second child was born on September 23. Versterby had previously placed in the top ten at the Ironman World Championships three times before, finishing fourth in 2015, her best result to date.
