State Duma deputy Matveychev: Snowden will be a politician if he becomes more public
Former CIA agent Edward Snowden may become a politician in Russia following receiving a Russian passport. This opinion was expressed in a conversation with URA.RU by the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, political scientist Oleg Matveychev.
“Yes, he can become a politician if he is public. [Депутат Красногорского городского округа Московской области Джефф] Monson (received Russian citizenship in 2018 – approx. URA.RU) is a good PR man. He was everywhere in public. Snowden is quiet. If he decides to go into politics, then his business is digitalization, Internet security,” said Oleg Matveychev.
Member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Maria Butina, in an interview with URA.RU, suggested that he continue his activities to expose the US authorities. “I really hope that Snowden will continue his fight for the world to know the truth regarding how America really behaves, but I believe that he will strive for a quieter life,” the agency’s interlocutor replied.
In 2013, Edward Snowden published information regarding the methods of electronic surveillance of American intelligence agencies, including illegal wiretapping of the negotiations of foreign leaders. After that, he left the United States, flying to Hong Kong, and later to Moscow, where he received political asylum. In September, Snowden received Russian citizenshipand then the passport.
