When on September 27 Hurricane Ian “unleashed” its fury on Pinewood of the riverthe workers of the atelier La Ópera, in the capital city, did not think that today they might make different garments for sale to the population.

Approved as a medium-sized company since the previous year, the unit compensated the damages following an intense construction process that allowed them to reopen their doors, even with new benefits for the people of Pinar del Río.

We lost all cover of the premises; but we were able to recover and we are currently working on productions dedicated to Mother’s Day, including sets of double bed sheets, shoe racks and mattress covers, Yiliagne Valdés Betancourt, head of that entity, explained to the Cuban News Agency.

We added the sale of recycled clothing and in the month of May we will begin to provide services directly to the population – as it has always been – to satisfy as many needs as possible, he said.

As we acquire raw materials, we will expand the services, since the atelier has historically had great demand from the people of Pinar del Río to make custom-made clothes; make arrangements; buy house robes, sheets or layette clothing associated with the Tenderness project.

This initiative was accepted years ago as a state entity and now the company will maintain it, since these are products that are often difficult for pregnant women to buy.

Likewise, from the chain with private and state entities, they also intend to offer cribs and mattresses to pregnant women.

Valdés Betancourt highlighted that as part of the corporate purpose of the medium-sized company is care for vulnerable cases and mothers with three or more children, previously identified by the Government; in addition, to the houses of grandparents.

For all these lines, La Ópera has 11 seamstresses with extensive professional experience, who over time have assumed the most varied textile confections.

One of them, Raisa Rodríguez Blanco, with more than two decades in the atelier, expressed her enthusiasm for the possibility of offering greater services to the population, in short, the raison d’être of the center located on the main artery of the city of Vueltabajera.

These months without working here, due to the recovery from the effects of the hurricane, helped us to better prepare ourselves for this moment and do a higher quality job, he specified.
