Mick Schumacher has a new job in Formula 1: The 23-year-old is working for Mercedes following leaving Haas. He becomes a backup driver.
As expected, Mick Schumacher will sit on the substitute bench in 2023: the 23-year-old will join Mercedes following leaving Haas. Schumacher becomes the reserve driver for the Silver Arrows.
Schumacher is said to play an important role in the further development of the W14. He will be working regularly in the simulator at Brackley throughout the year and will also continue to work at the circuit, the statement said.
In his new role, Schumacher will visit all Grands Prix and take on marketing tasks. And of course he will step in if regular drivers Lewis Hamilton or George Russell drop out.
Schumacher is highly praised in the racing team’s press release. “The 23-year-old has impressed throughout his career with his maturity, technical feedback and work ethic – all qualities that are highly valued in a driver. He now joins the team his father Michael drove for between 2010 and 2012.
“I am delighted to be a part of the Mercedes team as reserve driver for 2023 and I will do everything I can to contribute to the team’s performance in this very competitive and professional environment. I see this as a kind of fresh start and am very grateful to Toto and everyone involved for the trust they place in me. Formula 1 is a fascinating world where you never stop learning. I’m looking forward to absorbing even more knowledge and giving everything for the benefit of the Mercedes team,” said Schumacher.
“Mick is a talented young rider and we are delighted to have him on the team. He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities and we look forward to him helping us further develop the W14. We also know that with two years of experience in Formula 1, he will be able to step in for Lewis or George at short notice should this be necessary,” said team boss Toto Wolff.
