After election victory: Labour begins party conference in Liverpool

For the first time since its election victory in Great Britain, the Labour Party is meeting in Liverpool on Sunday for its annual party conference. The Social Democrats replaced the Conservative Party in government in the summer after 14 years. Deputy Prime Minister and Vice-Chairman Angela Rayner is scheduled to speak at midday (12.25 CEST). The speech by the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected on Tuesday.

High expectations are weighing on Starmer’s government – the Conservative Party of his predecessor Rishi Sunak was voted out of office in July with a historically poor result. Since then, the new government has repeatedly stressed the poor state of public finances and the NHS, for example. Starmer is appealing for patience with upcoming reforms. The wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip as well as relations with the EU are also on the government’s minds in London.
