After criticism and bad ratings: Out for CNN boss Chris Licht

After just a little over a year in office, the boss of the US news channel CNN, Chris Licht, has resigned.

Until a successor is found, a four-man management team should run the station, said the parent company Warner Bros. Discovery on Wednesday. Licht’s departure from CNN comes as no surprise – the past year was characterized by flops and weak ratings. Recently, a portrait of light in the magazine “The Atlantic” caused a stir and raised the question of whether the 51-year-old might continue to run the station. In it, Licht severely criticized the broadcaster’s reporting before his time.

“The task of running CNN has never been easy, especially at a time of great upheaval and change, and (Licht) has put his heart and soul into it,” said Warner Bros. Discovery President David Zaslav. Licht announced last year that it wanted to make the broadcaster, which is considered liberal, more credible for parts of the conservative Americans. He accused the broadcaster of too much opinion and polarization at the time. The world-famous “Breaking News” banner should also be used more sparingly. Large parts of the CNN workforce did not go down well with the new boss’s criticism of the station’s work.

Before his appointment as CNN boss, Licht was considered a successful man in the media business. Under his leadership, for example, the CBS channel’s breakfast show once reached historic ratings, and the number of viewers rose for an almost unbelievable 50 months in a row. At CNN, he failed to replicate his successes. A new breakfast show on CNN flopped – one of the main hosts, Don Lemon, was eventually fired. There was also great criticism of a live broadcast with ex-President Donald Trump, which was designed as a public question hour. Trump was able to spread his lies to millions of people on the show.
