As police spokesman Hans Wolfgruber said, the man is considered a strong suspect. He is said to have given contradictory information during his interrogations, which could not be reconciled with the evidence at the crime scene and the findings of the investigation so far.
Killed with a kitchen knife
The woman was killed with a knife. The suspect – he is Austrian – is the tenant of the apartment in which his 67-year-old mother was found dead. The man has not confessed, but he has now been transferred to the Salzburg prison. The arrest took place during the interrogation in the premises of the State Criminal Police Office. According to the police, no indications of other perpetrators have emerged in the course of the investigation so far. The murder weapon, a kitchen knife, was recovered from the apartment by officers after the crime.
What is certain is that the 67-year-old lived in Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria. As the “Salzburger Nachrichten” reported with reference to the apartment’s landlady, the victim may have often visited her son’s apartment.
DNA traces are evaluated
The discovery of the body triggered a major police operation on Tuesday evening. A resident of the house had notified the police. As part of the investigation, the police questioned numerous people and secured evidence. However, the evaluation of the DNA traces at the crime scene will probably take a few more days.
The police have not yet released any information about the course of events or the background to the crime. After the crime, police spokesman Wolfgruber pointed out that over 90 percent of homicides occur on the basis of a personal relationship between the perpetrator and the victim.

Interview with Police Spokesman Hans Wolfgruber on Recent Homicide Case
Editor: Good evening, Mr. Wolfgruber. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent tragic incident involving the murder of a 67-year-old woman in Berchtesgadener Land. Can you provide us with an overview of the situation as it stands?
Hans Wolfgruber: Thank you for having me. As you mentioned, the investigation is still ongoing. The primary suspect, an Austrian man and the victim’s son, is currently in custody at the Salzburg prison. He was apprehended during his interrogation after providing contradictory statements that did not align with the evidence we have gathered at the crime scene.
Editor: That raises some concerns. What evidence points to him as the strong suspect in this case?
Hans Wolfgruber: The key piece of evidence is the murder weapon; we recovered a kitchen knife from the apartment where the incident occurred. Additionally, the inconsistencies in the suspect’s statements during interrogation have led investigators to believe that he may be withholding crucial information. We have also confirmed that there are no indications of any other perpetrators being involved at this time.
Editor: It’s reported that the victim frequently visited her son’s apartment. How might this relationship have played a role in the investigation?
Hans Wolfgruber: Relationships can often complicate homicide cases, and they are crucial in understanding the motives behind such acts. As I mentioned previously, personal relationships are frequently a factor in over 90 percent of homicides. We are actively examining this relationship to determine the background and potential motives.
Editor: Let’s talk about the forensic aspects. You mentioned DNA traces are being evaluated. How long is this process expected to take?
Hans Wolfgruber: The evaluation of DNA evidence can be quite time-consuming, and we estimate that it may take a few more days to receive the results. This evidence is critical for corroborating other findings and might provide additional insight into the circumstances surrounding the crime.
Editor: Given the seriousness of the situation, what can you tell the public about the ongoing safety measures or community resources available for those who may be affected by such violence?
Hans Wolfgruber: Our primary focus is to ensure the community’s safety and support anyone who may be affected by incidents of domestic violence. We encourage anyone in need to reach out to local helplines and shelters, which offer confidential support and assistance. It’s essential for individuals to know that help is available if they feel threatened or in danger.
Editor: Thank you for your insights, Mr. Wolfgruber. We appreciate you taking the time to clarify the situation and provide valuable information to the community.
Hans Wolfgruber: Thank you for having me. It’s important to keep the public informed, especially in such sensitive cases.
Editor: Let’s talk about the forensic aspect. You mentioned that DNA traces are being evaluated from the crime scene. How vital is that evidence in this investigation?
Hans Wolfgruber: DNA evidence is critical in homicide investigations as it can provide definitive links between the suspect, the victim, and the crime scene. It can either corroborate statements made during interrogations or expose falsehoods. However, the analysis process can take several days, and we are working diligently to expedite this without compromising accuracy.
Editor: Understandably so. In your experience, how often do cases like this lead to clear resolutions?
Hans Wolfgruber: Every case is unique, but generally speaking, homicides with a personal connection, such as this one, tend to have more clarity in terms of motive and suspect identification. Our initial findings have been promising, and we are committed to thoroughly investigating every lead.
Editor: Thank you for this important insight, Mr. Wolfgruber. Is there anything else you would like to add regarding support services or resources available for those affected by domestic violence in relation to this case?
Hans Wolfgruber: Yes, absolutely. It’s essential for anyone experiencing violence or in dangerous situations to seek help. There are numerous organizations in Austria, such as the women’s helpline and local violence protection centers, that provide support and resources. We urge anyone in need to take advantage of these services.
Editor: Thank you, Mr. Wolfgruber, for your time and for shedding light on this troubling case. We appreciate the vital work of the police in ensuring community safety.
Hans Wolfgruber: Thank you for having me. It’s crucial to keep the public informed, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
