After billionaire acquisition: Skagen hotel gets a new name

It was designed in 1907 by an architect with close connections to Skagen’s well-known artistic milieu, and since then it has functioned as a well-visited gem in the heart of the tourist town at the top of Denmark.

Last summer, the hotel changed hands when the well-known big-time fisherman Henning Kjeldsen bought it together with his fiancee Anita Christensen.

The couple have big plans for the more than 100-year-old hotel, which currently has 17 rooms – including nine in the original main building. Henning Kjeldsen and Anita Christensen want to add 45 new rooms and a wellness department to their investment, but Frederikshavn Municipality has initially pushed those plans to the corner.

However, that does not prevent the new owners from opening the doors to a new season soon. But it will not be under the name Hotel Plesner – but rather with the new name Plesners Badehotel on the facade.

– A new journey has begun, say the new owners on the hotel’s Facebook page, where they emphasize that it is important to “highlight the historical connection to bathing culture and signal our continued focus on relaxation and well-being by the sea”.

Henning Kjeldsen has – since he sold out of his lucrative fishing quotas – invested massively in his hometown. He now owns around 60 properties in Skagen – among them four hotels – just as he is in full swing building a new machine museum, which will be centrally located at Skagen Harbor in the place where the auction hall used to be.

Even though Henning Kjeldsen has been wearing the big spender’s pants, he has – as far as is known – not made a bid for one of the most well-known addresses in Skagen, namely Brøndums Hotel, which was put up for sale in autumn 2023, following the long-time owner , Bendt Fredberg Jensen, died aged 93 on 1 July 2023.
