Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died on Friday following being shot at during an election campaign, according to NHK.
Nara University Hospital also confirmed Abe’s death. Doctor Hidetada Fukushima said, “Shinzo Abe was taken (to the hospital) at 12.20. His heart was in stagnant on arrival. Doctors tried to revive him, but unfortunately he died at 17.03” (0803 GMT).

The police revealed that they had arrested a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the attack. The National Broadcasting Corporation quoted the suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, as telling police that he was dissatisfied with Abe and wanted to kill him.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno stressed in a press briefing that “such a barbaric act cannot be tolerated.” He added that Abe was shot at around 1130 am local time (0230 GMT).
