After beating the Young Violets 2-0,Vorwarts is already gearing up for Sturm

Forward coach Daniel Madlener had already packed the first surprise in the most important game of the season in the team line-up: He gave striker Oliver Filip defensive tasks on the right. Similar to the lively Gerhard Dombaxi on the left, he should prevent advances by the young Viennese, but at the same time plow the flank with his power and thus make the Steyr game more unpredictable. He almost succeeded once, but failed to score alone in front of Austria goalkeeper Sandali Conde. And otherwise little was achieved in the first half – neither the red-whites, who were bobbing at the end of the table despite their recent good performances, nor the Young Violets, who were just one place ahead of the forwards and also thirsty for points.

Comeback of Apollonius

“We always believed in our chance and remained calm despite this visible tension,” says Madlener, “and with the 1-0 a few stones fell off the players. Our joy in playing came back. Before that, we were often a little too late mentally.”

After the restart everything should be very different. SK Forward came out of the dressing room more dynamically, combined from a solid defensive position suddenly more fluently and fueled the fans’ hopes of staying up in the league. The two strikers Kubilay Yilmaz and Tobias Pellegrini then played offensively in mutual interaction: First Pellegrini Yilmaz played the ball into the run and the 26-year-old pushed the ball in front of 1500 spectators in the forwards stadium to take the deserved 1-0 lead ( 65.). That broke the ice. Four minutes before the end of regular time, the preliminary decision was made: Yilmaz served Pellegrini with a sweet pass, and he made it 2-0. With his seventh goal, the player from Linz is clearly the best forward goalscorer.

“We’ve changed our game system, more on relegation battle, more high balls, that’s good for me,” says Pellegrini, “it’s also less risky, that’s why we concede fewer goals.” In itself, the SKV have the quality for the top half of the table: ” Karma is finally coming back. But we have earned this happiness.”

In the collective ecstasy of players and fans, one event in the 89th minute was a bit lost: 23-year-old St. Valentiner Silvio Apollonio, who was seriously injured following just eleven minutes without outside influence in his championship debut for the red-whites last July was finally able to breathe championship air once more following tearing his meniscus and cruciate ligament.

But the Steyrers don’t have time to freak out following this vital victory. The Red and Whites, who are now in 14th place in the table, will be playing next-door neighbors Sturm Graz II on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
