After beating Racing and Instituto, Talleres de Remedios de Escalada struck a new blow and eliminated Banfield from the Argentine Cup

The Centenario Ciudad de Quilmes stadium was the scene of the duel in the south of the Buenos Aires suburbs in which Banfield and Talleres de Remedios de Escalada faced each other for a place in the quarterfinals of the Argentine Cup. The series that included the modest team from the Ascenso was watched askance by Racing fans, given that the team led by Martín Rolón became the surprising executioner of the Academia in the most federal competition in the country (previously it had eliminated Instituto de Córdoba, in its debut).

El Taladro, on the other hand, arrived at their match after humiliating Bolívar with a resounding 6-0 thrashing and leaving behind Independiente Rivadavia of Mendoza, in a match that ended 2-1.

At 23 minutes into the first half, a set piece by Matías González found the ball for Ignacio Rodríguez who opened the scoring, despite Damián Tello’s complaints, given that the goalkeeper demanded an alleged foul in attack for an obstruction that referee Fernando Echenique ignored. In a competition without VAR, Gustavo Munúa’s men celebrated to start thinking about Huracán, who was waiting in the next instance.

However, before the protagonists went to the break, a free kick by Fernando Enrique towards the head of Fernando Duré levelled the score at the Cervecero park. The striking reaction of José Devecchi, who gave an image similar to that of the PlayStation goalkeepers when an error occurs in the matrix, made the work of the central midfielder easier.

The sacrifice of Talleres de Remedios de Escalada in the second half was so intense that Sebastián Gallardo and Tomás Asprea had to be replaced due to muscle discomfort. Jeremías Denis and Nicolás Molina were responsible for entering to keep the match balanced.

The last five minutes of extra time were filled with tension. Banfield’s Uruguayan coach could not hide his annoyance, while Rolón’s men managed to paralyze the hearts of the Taladro, with an action that Alejandro Maciel saved on the goal line. It was Duré’s goal that would have sealed another surprise, although the penalties left an uncertain outcome. The ticket to the next round was decided from the twelve steps.

Cinderella struck again to reach the round of the last eight. Damián Tello’s remarkable performance in stopping Bisanz and Echeverria’s shots was decisive in the delirium of his fans. “A minute of silence for Banfield, which is dead,” was heard effusively from the stands after Bonifacio sent his shot over the crossbar and Denis sealed the victory with a magnificent shot to the other post by José Devecchi. In Remedios de Escalada the celebrations will extend until dawn, because the humble team from the south has once again written a historic chapter. No one sleeps today.
