The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that the Kosovo Serbs are in a difficult situation, since they will not participate in the extraordinary local elections that will be held in the north of Kosovo on April 23.

According to him, once the new local authorities are formed in North Mitrovica, Zveçan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok – municipalities in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a Serb majority – there will be a “complete occupation”.

“Tomorrow, our people will calmly, responsibly and disdainfully look at those who will come from South Mitrovica to vote to elect a new leadership in North Mitrovica, Leposavic, Zvecan and Zubin Potok. What will happen next, will be a complete invasion for which the citizens are already ready, they are used to it. They will be quiet, they will be responsible, we will pay the wages as before, we will fight even harder for them, we will raise the standards and wait for better times in which, the Charter of The UN will be valid as well as public international law,” said Vučić on April 22, reports the Serbian news agency, Beta.

Vucic, however, did not bring any evidence to support his claims of, as he said, “conquering the north”. The Serbian President also commented on the statement of the spokesperson of the European Union. Peter Stanowho said that the European bloc is disappointed that the Serbian List and the Serbs will not participate in the April 23 elections.

The Serbian leader said that Serbs in Kosovo have participated in several election cycles, but now they should not participate before the Association of Serb-majority municipalities is formed.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, on April 22 called on the citizens in the north to go to the polls. She said that their appearance in the elections would be a “strong message” for those who, according to her, have “threatened and intimidated” the residents in the north not to participate in the election process.

In addition to the four new mayors, on April 23 there will also be voting for the new composition of the municipal assemblies in Zveçan and Leposaviq. In the elections, 10 candidates for mayor of municipalities are competing and only one is from the ranks of the Serbian community. The main party of the Serbs in Kosovo, Lista Serbe, does not participate in the elections and has called for their boycott.

The elections are being held following on November 5, 2022, the mayors of North Mitrovica, Leposaviç, Zveçan and Zubin Potok from the Serbian List, resigned.

They, together with municipal assemblymen and other officials from the security and justice sector, took this decision as a sign of dissatisfaction with a decision of the Government of Kosovo, which obliged Serbs to replace their car license plates, issued by Serbia, with those RKS – Republic of Kosovo. The elections were originally scheduled for December 18, 2022, but were canceled due to tensions in the north of Kosovo/REL
