A 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook the sparsely populated southeastern part of the island, the Taiwan Meteorological Bureau said on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The US Geological Survey put the quake’s strength at 7.2, and the US Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Taiwan following the quake.
The US Geological Survey said a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Saturday, but no casualties or damage were reported.
He added that the earthquake struck shortly following 9:30 pm (13:30 GMT), regarding 50 km north of the coastal city of Taitung, at a depth of 10 km.
And local media immediately reported that no injuries or damage were recorded in the earthquake, on Saturday.
The Taiwan Meteorological Bureau estimated it was 6.4 degrees and struck at a depth of 7.3 kilometres.
The island does not issue tsunami warnings unless the earthquake is stronger than 7.
Some earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more can be deadly, but it depends on where and how deep the earthquake occurred.
Taiwan lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide.
