After a long struggle: the state and city agree on light rail financing

2023-12-11 12:04:00

With the agreement between the state of Upper Austria and the city of Linz regarding the financing of the “milestone” project, the light rail project should finally gain momentum. This will achieve “essential traffic relief for Linz, especially on the very busy commuter routes”.

In a joint press conference, Governor Thomas Stelzer, State Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner, Linz Mayor Klaus Luger and Vice Mayor Martin Hajart, who is responsible for transport, presented the key points of the financing agreement, which form the basis for negotiations with the federal government. The federal government should cover 50 percent of the costs, and a corresponding agreement on this is urgent, especially since National Council elections will take place next year. A “Memorandum of Understanding” with Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler has already been signed, but a concrete financing agreement with the federal government is still needed, it was said.

The schedule therefore also stipulates that the final project documents will be completed by the state in January 2024 and transmitted to the federal government.

According to the financing agreement, the state will cover 42.5 percent of the costs for the important infrastructure project, and the city of Linz will cover 7.5 percent, with a maximum contribution of 50 million euros. An agreement has also been reached on the financing of the trolleybus. The state pays 40 percent of the costs here, the share is capped at 23.7 million euros. As reported, the light rail and trolleybuses will run on the same route. Only on Reindlstraße there will be no duplication. Only the light rail will operate here. This is also a detail in the agreement between the state and the city.
