After a long Covid, the risk of having a stroke is 52% greater

People who have contracted the disease are at increased risk of cardiovascular problems in the year following contamination with Covid-19.

Fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath… the signs of Covid-19 usually disappear in two to three weeks. But in some cases, they can persist beyond four weeks, we then speak of long Covid. A study recently published in the scientific journal Nature suggests that people who have tested positive for Covid-19 are also at higher risk of having a cardiovascular problem in the month following infection. This risk is significant for up to one year following contamination.

For this study, the researchers analyzed data from more than 150,000 people who tested positive for Covid-19 between March 1, 2020 and January 15, 2021. These data were compared with those of two control groups made up of 6 million people. , over the same period and over the period preceding the study. The majority of the cohort was made up of white men with an average age of 61.4.

+193% risk of pulmonary embolism

The results show that people who have developed a long Covid have a 52% higher risk of developing a CVA (cerebrovascular accident) in the following year, 72% higher risk of heart failure and 193% higher risk of pulmonary embolism. The increased risk was observed even in patients who did not present with comorbidities, although it is higher in patients who were hospitalized.

According to scientist Ziyad Al-Aly, a co-author interviewed by The world, these results reinforce “the importance of getting vaccinated”. Especially since vaccination does not lead to an increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and pulmonary embolism in adults.
