Salzburg were behind 3:11 early once morest the Future Team from Bregenz, but fought their way back to 25:26.
The UHC also lost its first away game in the new season of the HLA Challenge North/West (2nd Bundesliga). A week following the 28:32 home defeat once morest the Future Team from Hard following a long lead, the Salzburg handball players had to admit defeat to the Bregenz youth team with 25:26.
This time it wasn’t the final minutes that were to blame, but rather a completely botched start phase.
Two comebacks were not enough
0:4, 2:7, 3:11 – these intermediate scores are symbolic of the bitter first quarter of an hour. An initial comeback allowed Salzburg to reduce the deficit to four goals, but at the break the scoreboard read a sobering 11:18. In the second half, the UHC were no longer so easy to shoot down and fought their way back goal by goal. Led by newcomer Patrick Fuchs, who scored twelve goals, Salzburg finally got within 24:25 and 25:26. But the equalizer was no longer possible.
“Catastrophic mistakes”
“An annoying, unnecessary defeat. We made the opponent strong from start to finish with our sometimes catastrophic mistakes,” said coach Herbert Wagner, summing up the disappointing match. “The only positive thing was that, despite the disastrous start, we didn’t give up like we did at 18:32 in the previous season, but fought well and really tried everything until the end. But two technical errors were also the cause in the final phase that we were no longer able to equalize.”
