Clean-up work has been underway since Friday followingnoon following a freight train partially derailed near Wels and the Western Railway line had to be temporarily closed. Four tank cars had overturned and two were leaking styrene – a highly flammable, toxic liquid that is used to make plastic.
Four teams from the Wels volunteer fire department arrived in special protective suits and tried to seal the leaky wagons and collect the escaping liquid, as the fire department reports. They were supported by specialist advisors with special equipment and other firefighters from other departments.
On Saturday, a company was still busy pumping the rest of the liquid out of the damaged tank wagons – only then might the recovery begin.
The Wels fire department is still on hand as a fire watch.
The fire department said there was no danger to residents in the area.
