A mysterious murder that has been under investigation for decades, has finally been deciphered by a “cup of espresso”, drunk by the perpetrator at Philadelphia International Airport, where 68-year-old David Sinopoli, accused of killing 19-year-old Lindy Sue Bechler, was arrested in Lancaster County in December. 1975.
The case was one of the longest unresolved “cold cases” in the United States, and regarding 300 people were investigated in the case between Pichler’s murder and Sinopoli’s arrest.
And authorities resorted to a new method to identify Sinopoli as a possible suspect, as Sinopoli was tracked and when he was at the airport in February, investigators waited for him to dispose of a cup of espresso in the trash for DNA analysis, and discovered a match between Sinopoli’s fingerprints and the DNA discovered on Pichler’s underwear.
The Lancaster County District Attorney said: “This case has been resolved using DNA and we hope this brings some relief to the loved ones of the victim and to the community that has had no answers for the past 46 years.”
