Many of us have had a PlayStation DualSense in our hands since 2020. The new generation of Japanese consoles is in fact accompanied by a completely renewed controller, retaining the classic aesthetic with the touchpad on the top and the Pulse to give life to 3D audio. However, some, like our colleague from 3DJuegos, were surprised by a feature of the PS5 controller…
The “Mute” button on the PS5 controller has a second hidden function!
If you own a DualSense, whether you’re using it on PS5 or PC, you know that pressing the button below the PlayStation logo mutes the controller’s built-in microphone. The function is simple and the images are just as easy to understand: if the LED is orange, no one will hear you in any online game.
However, the button itself has an additional function. As with most wireless devices these days, if you hold down a button, let’s call it X, a second function is activated: either remapping the same button or a shutdown sequence. In this case, holding down the “mute” button on the remote control for approximately two seconds will allow you to mute all audio output devices, without exception. From HDMI receivers to USB headphones to TV speakers.
This is perfect if a loved one walks into the room and you don’t want them to know you’re playing, or if you hear a strange sound at night when you’re alone. But how to reactivate the sound? This mode lasts until you press the button once more and hold it for the same amount of time. Simple and easy.
A new controller with more autonomy?
The abandonment of wired controllers results in two options: batteries or batteries. Devices such as PlayStation controllers have opted for the latter solution, but have run into the problem of battery life. The PS5’s DualSense has been criticized for this, but a new version apparently with a “12-hour battery” has recently hit the market. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this is official at the moment since Sony hasn’t communicated anything regarding it yet.
US retailer Best Buy has put what it calls the “PlayStation 5 DualSense V2” on sale for $89.99. The term “V2” clearly indicates that this is a small upgrade to the device. If we read the specifications, they mention the following: “exceptional battery life of 12 hours on a full charge allows for long gaming sessions.” The problem is that the web page is now no longer available: an announcement made too early?
