Afro-Peruvian collages episode 5, by QOQEQA

To properly commemorate Peruvian Creole Song Day, QOQEQA signs the fifth and final episode of the series with a selection of its favorite traditional pieces, punctuated with electronic interpretations.

In 1944, President Manuel Prado Ugarteche formalized Creole Song Day by decree, under the leadership of the philanthropist and music lover Juan Manuel Carrera del Corral. Since then, every October 31, Peruvians pay homage to Creole music and its heroes, partying in the streets and bars in conjunction with Halloween, particularly in Lima and Trujillo, on the coast. The Peruvian waltz, the festejo, the zamacueca and tondero rhythms are part of this musical genre; a mixture of rhythms inherited from the Spanish colonizers, the indigenous people of Peru and the enslaved Africans.

In 2021, the Peruvian producer amazed lovers of avant-garde Latin music with AXUHA, a first album released on Kebrada, the structure of masters in the subject Dengue Dengue Dengue. With releases on the reference labels Eck-Echo, ZZK, Fértil and Terror Negro, Daniel Valle-Riestra experiments, subjecting the wide variety of Afro-Latin rhythms to the infinite possibilities of machines. Reflecting his roots, from the coast, the Andes and the Amazonian jungle, QOQEQA’s music is a post-modern homage to his ancestors, which he invokes in this melancholic selection, driven by 6/8 rhythms.

“Memories from my childhood, traditional waltzes performed by my favorite singers who carry Peruvian heritage in their voices, stories from the time of Afro-Peruvian slavery, contemporary electronic versions of pieces that also contain this atmosphere, an emotional selection of pieces that represent Creole folklore. »
