The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has reiterated the primary responsibility of the UN Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security.
“In fulfilling its mandate, the Peace and Security Council (of the African Union) cooperates and works closely with the United Nations Security Council, which has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of peace and international security,” said the PSC in a statement issued Thursday and having endorsed an orientation program for elected and re-elected members of the PSC, including Morocco, held from March 23 to 25 in Maseru, Lesotho.
The main objective of the orientation program was to acquaint the newly elected members of the PSC with the mandate, functions, powers and works and working methods of the PSC, before the start of their respective terms of office on 1 April 2022. -we.
In addition to the UN Security Council, the program also focused on the working relationship between the AU PSC and the Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution (RECs/RMs) , other related organs of the AU whose respective mandates include aspects related to the promotion of peace, security and stability in Africa, as well as the general welfare of the people of Africa, the African members of the United Nations Security Council (A3), the Political and Security Committee of the European Union and the Peace and Security Council of the League of Arab States, as well as civil society organisations.
Morocco was represented at this meeting by a delegation led by Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi.
In addition to Morocco, the AU PSC is composed of: Congo, Gambia, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal.
