African Telecommunications Union: DRC takes over the Presidency of the Board of Directors

The Democratic Republic of Congo took over, on Monday, July 8, 2024, the Presidency of the Board of Directors of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU). This was during the 25th ordinary session of the said council, opened in Kinshasa by the Congolese Prime Minister.

In her speech on this occasion, Judith Suminwa Tuluka highlighted the importance of these meetings for the DR Congo. The head of the national executive also hoped that the work would place particular emphasis on cooperation between the member countries of this structure.

“Indeed, this is part of one of the pillars of the government’s action program on global connectivity in the DRC. I hope that this 25th ordinary session of the ATU board of directors will be a success. I would like the work to place a point of honor on cooperation between our countries,” she urged.

Long before, the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, Augustin Kibassa, expressed his gratitude to the UAT for renewing its confidence in the DRC to host this session, before noting the extent to which the Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi, gives priority to digital transformation for the integral development of Congo.

“This is a mark of recognition for us not only of our strategic geographical position in the heart of Africa, but also of the role we play in promoting and supporting initiatives aimed at improving telecommunications infrastructure within our continent,” said the government official.

Furthermore, he welcomed an important point that will be addressed during this session, namely: the repatriation of the UAT headquarters to his country.

“The repatriation of the ATU headquarters to the DRC is our strategic priority aimed at strengthening our position and leadership within the African continent. I would like to reaffirm the DRC’s commitment to always work alongside its African peers to find suitable solutions through discussions and reflections to harmonize our political and strategic frameworks in order to achieve the objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063,” said Augustin Kibassa.

This 25th ordinary session of the ATU Board of Directors is attended by delegates from 48 Member States.
