With the continuation of the Russian military operation in Ukraine without any imminent solutions on the horizon, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced today, Tuesday, that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to receive a group of African leaders to discuss a possible peace plan to end the conflict.
Ramaphosa said during a brief press statement with the Prime Minister of Singapore that his discussions with the two leaders showed their willingness to receive African leaders and discuss ways to end this conflict.
“The chances of this succeeding will depend on the discussions that take place,” he added.
He added that the peace plan is also supported by the leaders of Senegal, Uganda and Egypt, and that the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the United States and Britain are aware of the initiative.
Ramaphosa said Washington and London had expressed their cautious support for the peace plan.
It is noteworthy that, following a hiatus of weeks, Russia resumed its long-range missile strikes in late April. And launched in recent days a wave of air strikes, which often target the capital, in the continuation of the clashes between the two parties.
While the Ukrainian forces were preparing to launch their counterattack, which was expected weeks ago, before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky returned and clarified that the aforementioned attack was slightly postponed despite the military preparations, in order to avoid heavy human losses.
