African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Friday for a peace mediation with Russia.

The South African presidential press office released a brief statement and video showing the arrival of President Cyril Ramaphosa at a Kiev train station.

The South African leader arrived in Kyiv from Poland by train, accompanied by other members of the African mission, including the presidents of Zambia, Comoros and Senegal.

The delegation will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with the aim of finding solutions to the Ukrainian crisis and achieving peace with Russia.

Ramaphosa will be in the Russian city of St. Petersburg later in the day, where the African delegation will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced that African leaders were due to arrive in Poland on Thursday for mediation between Kyiv and Moscow.

Museveni said in a tweet that six African presidents from Comoros, Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Republic of Congo and Zambia are expected in Poland on Thursday before traveling to Kyiv by train to serve as mediators in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Last week, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and briefed him on the “African leaders’ peace mission”.

“President Putin welcomed the initiative of African heads of state and expressed his wish to host the peace mission,” said a statement from Cyril Ramaphosa’s office.

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine, prompting a wave of condemnation from the international community. To put an end to it, Moscow is demanding that kyiv renounce all plans to join any military entity and remain neutral, which Ukraine considers an “attack on its sovereignty”.
