African Football Confederation increases prize for CAN finalists – news

The African Football Confederation (CAF) announced a 40 percent increase in the monetary prize for the winner of the African Cup of Nations (CAN`2023), to be played from Saturday (13), in Côte d`Ivoire.

The winner of TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d`Ivoire 2023 (English denomination) will receive USD 7,000,000 (USD seven million), compared to the 1,250,000 (USD one million two hundred and fifty thousand) received by the previous champion two years ago.

The runner-up of the continental event will now receive USD 4,000,000 (USD four million) and each of the two semi-finalists will be entitled to USD 2,500,000 (USD two million and five hundred thousand).

However, each of the four quarter-finalists will be entitled to USD 1,300,000 (USD one million three hundred thousand).

The decision was confirmed by the president of CAF, Patrice Motsepe, justifying the increase with the need to align the organization’s strategy of increasing the commercial value of African competitions.

In the CAF note, where the news is announced, the president of the governing body says he is confident that the monetary prize will contribute to the development of football and also the affiliated federations.
