“Africa must trust Africa”

The Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union and the ECA, Mr. Mohamed Arrouchi, recalled, on Tuesday in Dakar, during the ECA Ministerial Conference, the basis of inter-African cooperation, stressing that ” Africa must trust Africa“, in accordance with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him.

Speaking at the 54th session of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (CoM2022), held in Diamniadio near Dakar, from May 11 to 17, with the participation of a delegation Morocco composed of representatives of the competent sectoral departments, Mr. Arrouchi having led the delegation, in this regard, highlighted the prerequisites for sustainable development in Africa which are, he specified, regional integration and south-south cooperation.

The Moroccan diplomat noted that the mobilization of funding is not an end in itself, but a means to best serve the vital interests of African citizens in terms of development at a time when Africa is facing multiple socio-economic challenges caused by the epidemic and accentuated by the situation prevailing on the international scene, and its repercussions on food security aggravated by climate change and energy stress and its implications on the continent.

It should be noted that the delegation of the Kingdom of Morocco during this 54th Conference organized a Side-event focused on the challenges of mobilizing the capital market to finance the sustainable energy transition in Africa.

It should also be recalled that Morocco chaired the Conference in 2019 and 2020 and currently sits on the ECA Forum for Sustainable Development as second vice-president. this is a resolute commitment to a constant contribution to the process of sustainable development in Africa.

The hybrid event was co-organized by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Government of Senegal under the theme “Financing Africa’s Recovery: Reaching New Horizons”, at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD) of Diamniadio, located 30 km from Dakar.

The official opening ceremony of the Conference was chaired on Monday by the Senegalese Head of State, Macky Sall, Chairman-in-Office of the African Union (UA).

It was preceded by a meeting of the Committee of Experts, held from 11 to 13 May, during which the participants discussed technical matters relating to the theme of the said Conference and certain statutory questions of the ECA.

Other side events were also organized on 14 and 15 May to address issues related to health, infrastructure, education, climate action and the mobilization of resources in support of a recovery inclusive and sustainable for African countries. The Conference program included high-level ministerial panels and panel discussions on how to turn the lingering threat of the Covid-19 pandemic into an accelerator of global growth and prosperity.
