Afghanistan: Fifty dead due to floods in the western part of the country – 2024-07-15 16:52:44

At least 50 people lost their lives due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in western Afghanistanthe police announced today.

“Fifty residents of Ghor province died in the floods that occurred yesterday, Friday, and the fate of a number of others is unknown,” said provincial police spokesman Abdul Rahman Badri.

The floods they destroyed regarding 2,000 homes and damaged thousands more, he added.

“The terrible floods also killed many livestock, (…) destroyed thousands of acres of farmland, hundreds of bridges and thousands of trees,” he added, noting that roads have been “completely blocked.”

According to the head of the information service of the central province of Ghor, Maulawi Abdul Hai Zaim, there is currently no information on how many people were injured in the floods caused by the torrential rains that started yesterday, due to which there is no access to many main arterial roads leading to the area.

He also added that 2,000 houses were completely destroyed and 4,000 partially damaged, noting that more than 2,000 shops in the provincial capital, Feroz-Koch, have been submerged.

Other provinces in northern Afghanistan were hit by flash floods late last week, and more rain is expected, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.

At least 300 people have died in the floods, mostly in Baghlan province, according to the UN World Food Program and Taliban officials.

The torrential rains followed an unusually dry winter and years of drought in a country considered by experts to be among the most vulnerable to climate change.
