An Afghan, who is in prison for the murder of an Albanian, is alleged to be the instigator of the arson attacks on Jewish targets in central Athens, according to ERT.

Specifically in a hotel and a restaurant, where an informal synagogue also operates in the center of Athens, in the area of Psirri.

The plan to attack the same sites was also revealed in March 2023. At that time, a Pakistani citizen who was in his homeland was acting as the guide, the natural perpetrators were again arrested by the Anti-Terrorism and the attack was foiled.

The Afghan prisoner is alleged to have commissioned a group of individuals to carry out the arson attacks, with religious motives, from within the prison. One of the 7 arrested claimed that he would take a 3,000 euro fee from the Afghan man for the attack.

The first arson took place on May 15. Two of the foreigners arrested (one from Iraq and one from Afghanistan aged 46 and 36) and the 25-year-old Greek woman broke the windows and with cloths soaked in flammable liquid set fire to the hotel and the restaurant located next door. Their identification was made by visual material from security cameras.

The second attack was carried out by another group again at dawn, on 18/6/2024. The 44-year-old Greek and a 26-year-old foreigner arrived at the scene with a stolen motorcycle and flammable liquid and caused a fire at the entrance of the restaurant (which also operates an informal synagogue).

From visual material, as well as identifications of fingerprints and genetic material, from the stolen motorcycle they abandoned after the Lenorman Street attack and from an air pistol they threw away, the Anti-Terrorist officers arrived at their identification.
