The Asian Football Confederation announces the withdrawal of Chinese club Shanghai Port from the 2022 AFC Champions League, due to Corona.
The Asian Football Confederation announced today, Monday, the withdrawal of the Chinese club, Shanghai Port, from participating in the 2022 AFC Champions League.
The AFC confirmed that the Shanghai club had faced great difficulties in travel, as a result of the closure decision that was recently imposed in the city of Shanghai in China in order to confront a new wave of the Corona virus.
And the sub-committee on the Corona virus in the AFC decided, according to Article 5.2 of the competition regulations, to cancel all matches of Shanghai Port, with the tenth group (J) remaining from three clubs: Chiangrai United of Thailand, Kechi of Hong Kong and Vissel Kobe of Japan.
The matches of the first round of the group stage for the East Asian region in the Champions League will start next Friday, corresponding to the 15th of April.
It is noteworthy that Shanghai has won the Chinese Super League on two occasions, and reached the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League in 2017, when it was known as Shanghai SIPG.
