THE Argentine Football Association (AFA) has officially lodged a protest with FIFA regarding the controversy that occurred in the opening match of Group B of the 2024 Paris Olympics between the Argentine national team and the Moroccan national team.

According to TyC Sports, AFA President Claudio Tapia confirmed that they have lodged a protest with FIFA over what happened in the first Group B match of the 2024 Olympics.

Argentina’s 1-2 defeat to Morocco was marred by riots and a number of controversies in the opening match of Group B at the 2024 Olympics at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, Wednesday (24/7).

Morocco took a 1-0 lead towards the end of the first half through Soufiane Rahimi’s goal and increased their lead to 2-0 early in the second half thanks to Rahimi’s penalty in the 51st minute.

Argentina only managed to score in the 68th minute through Giuliano Simeone’s tap-in. Cristian Medina was considered to be Argentina’s savior from defeat with his header in the 90+16th minute.

However, Medina’s goal sparked a riot from Moroccan fans who entered the field and threw a number of objects onto the field. The incident caused referee Glenn Nyberg to stop the match for about 2 hours.

As play resumed for three minutes, Nyberg reviewed Medina’s goal with VAR. The result was that Medina’s goal was disallowed because Bruno Amione was deemed to have been in an offside position when Medina’s goal occurred.

With Medina’s goal disallowed, Morocco still led 2-1. The lead lasted until the end of the match.

AFA President Claudio Tapia regretted the incident experienced by the Argentine national team in the first match of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“It is a shame what Argentina experienced today in Saint-Etienne. Waiting for almost 2 hours in the dressing room after the entry of Moroccan fans and the violence experienced by the Argentine delegation,” said Tapia.

“Then our players had to go out again to warm up and continue the match that should have been suspended by the main referee, it really doesn’t make sense, it violates the rules of the competition,” he continued. (Ant/Z-1)
