Laser devices, medical products and devices that do not meet legal requirements have been seized by the Vaud authorities in an aesthetic center in the Lausanne region, the Vaud police announced on Monday. “The operator of the beauty institute did not fulfill the conditions allowing her to perform aesthetic treatments using these products, the use of which is reserved for doctors holding a license to practice, or even nurses operating under the direct control of a doctor”, indicated Jean-Christophe Sauterel, of the Vaud police.

Four police officers carried out a search of the center a month ago, in the presence of the prosecutor who is investigating the case and the assistant cantonal pharmacist. The operator of the beauty centre, a 36-year-old Swiss woman, was released following her hearing. The sequestered material was sent to the cantonal doctor for further checks. The investigations are continuing.

Botox, attention danger

For their part, the health authorities of Vaud remind the population that the injection of Botox or hyaluronic acid for aesthetic purposes is not a trivial gesture. This practice “must be carried out by authorized health professionals”, said the canton’s information and communication office (BIC). “Several reports of beauty centers promoting this type of intervention, including the one that is the subject of criminal proceedings, have taken place recently,” continued the cantonal body, which recalled that “the injection of botox by unqualified persons is illegal”.

Improperly performed injections can clog the small vessels that nourish the skin and cause serious necrosis, and in some cases lead to hospitalization.
