It could all be that simple, French Trade Minister Olivia Grégoire must have thought. She was interviewed during a panel discussion with the regional newspaper South West asked how to deal with ever-rising food prices. Just ‘learn to cook for yourself’, was her answer.

She is not entirely wrong, prices for ready-made meals in France have risen faster than average food prices. But she still gets the full brunt of the left half of the French opposition. Critics accuse her of being detached from reality.

A quote from the late comedian Michel Colucci is frequently shared on the internet: “Tell us what you need, and we will tell you how to do without it.” Grégoire himself calls it ‘common sense’. It is “good for your health and your wallet, even in times without a crisis”.
