Advantages of on-farm slaughter in Wallonia: Animal welfare, short circuits, and health analysis

Wallonia is getting closer, little by little, to authorizing slaughter on farms, indicated the Walloon Minister of Animal Welfare, Céline Tellier (Ecolo), on Tuesday, in committee of the Walloon Parliament.

For the minister, the practice “offers many advantages, starting with animal welfare since by avoiding the transport of an animal, we reduce its stress and suffering“. “Slaughtering is also the ‘weak link’ of short circuits. It is important to encourage this practice, to allow breeders to reclaim this important step.“, she added when questioned on the subject by Green MP Anne Kelleter.

In the field, two studies were financed, in collaboration with the Minister of Agriculture Willy Borsus, to analyze the possibilities for implementing this on-farm slaughter in Wallonia.

Led by the University of Liège, they concluded in particular that the consumption of meat from cattle slaughtered on a farm would not present increased risks for human health. “However, this must be confirmed by new swab results taken during heatwave periods.“, clarified Céline Tellier.

My administration and the research team had constructive discussions with the FASFC, the federal agency for the safety of the food chain, to discuss a revision of the circular imposing a 45-minute delay between bleeding and ‘evisceration. In view of these encouraging results, it is planned to set up a new research agreement for a pilot project on on-farm slaughter in Wallonia, between the Walloon Region and the research team from the University of Liège.“, she continued.
