New Delhi: The Congress has released a letter sent by LK Advani, who was the president of the BJP parliamentary party in 2012, to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012 when the bill introduced by the Center in the Rajya Sabha to remove the Chief Justice from the committee to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners was controversial.

Advani has sent a letter suggesting that the Chief Election Commissioner and other members should be selected by a five-member committee or collegium. The letter suggested a panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the leaders of the opposition in both houses of Parliament and the law minister.

In a letter dated June 2, 2012, Advani says that the current system of appointing Election Commission members by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister does not inspire confidence among the people.

Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said by tweeting the letter that the Modi government is once morest Advani’s position on the bill tabled in the Rajya Sabha and the verdict of the Supreme Court Constitution Bench. Jairam Ramesh accused the Modi government of taking control of the Election Commission.
