Rik Vandenberghe, head of the memory clinic at UZ Leuven and neurologist, is cautious when reading the vaccine results. “The test is still too limited, which does not allow real conclusions to be drawn,” says the professor. According to him, we must wait for studies on larger groups of patients and other vaccines to see if the vaccination is really effective.
“We are still a long way from having a true cure. This is why innovative research is so crucial. A lot of funding is still needed to make real advances in dementia research and care.”
Specialists, alongside the Alzheimer Research Foundation, are therefore calling for better financial support for scientific studies as well as the training of anyone personally or professionally involved in dementia.
One in five Belgians will develop a form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease in most cases. Among women, the proportion is even one in three. Currently, between 141,000 and 200,000 people in Belgium suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The number of Belgians suffering from dementia is expected to increase by more than 33% in ten years to approach 300,000 people.
