An Egyptian scientist expects to reach a cure for aging within 10 years

An Egyptian researcher in genomics was able to draw a genetic map that leads to understanding a mechanism that may help reach a cure for aging within a few years.

In an interview with the “Arab World News Agency” (AWP), researcher Dr. Haitham Shaaban expected to reach drugs to treat the manifestations of aging within 10 years, pointing to the great development in the field of genomes in recent years.

Shaaban, who is a project manager on cancer research at the Agora Center in Lausanne and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, added that, through his map, he understood the causes of cell aging in the human body, which includes, in addition to the age factor, many other influences such as nervous stress and causes. genetic.

The map also leads to an understanding of the mechanism of restoring aging cells to the youthful stage, through reorganizing the genome using modern techniques of his innovation.

His study was published in the journal Cell Death and Differentiation, which is one of the journals of the international medical group Nature.

He said, “With age, senescent cells accumulate in the body. They stop multiplying, but they do not die.”

He continued that these cells remain in the body and continue to release chemicals that lead to inflammation, and in turn contribute to the development of diseases such as aging and age-related diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegeneration, which is the gradual loss of nerve cell functions.

Cell aging

Dr. Shaaban talked regarding his research project, which he said enabled the development of techniques for imaging the human genome in living cells to study genetic interactions and changes in the structures of the genetic material.

He said, “These techniques will reveal many secrets related to the complete reorganization of the genome occurring in senescent cells, and were not addressed in previous studies due to the lack of these techniques.”

He referred to the great development in treatment through cells, saying: “A treatment has been reached for some cells, such as pancreatic cells that are being treated, so that the pancreas returns to work once more normally following removing the aging cells.”

He also talked regarding the use of senescent cells in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, where cancer cells are injected with senescent cells, causing them to stop dividing and multiplying.

Shaaban stated that his study comes as a continuation of previous research, explaining: “In 2016, the four proteins that cause cell aging were reached, and experiments were conducted on mice in which senile cells might be treated in 30 percent of these mice, while no access was reached.” A result in 70 percent or knowing the reasons why these cells do not respond.

He said that in his research, he was able to reach the mechanisms of interaction of senescent cells, which opens the door to the response of all these cells at some point.

He added that aging cells that stop dividing cause damage to neighboring cells, which results in many diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer, and their accumulation causes aging.
