Advancements in Federal Budget Discussions: Updates on Vivaldi’s Delicate Arbitration

Federal budget discussions appear to have advanced. The government, meeting in a select committee since 10:30 a.m., addressed the delicate phase of arbitration between the different components of Vivaldi. Some participants did not rule out a landing in the evening or night, others were more cautious banking on an agreement during the night from Monday to Tuesday, like what happened in previous years.

The De Croo team is seeking between 800 million and 1.2 billion euros to deliver a 2024 budget in line with the commitments made within the framework of the Stability Pact which provides for a deficit below 3% of GDP in 2026.

A new budget table has been submitted, we learned on Sunday evening. The government conducts its negotiations in accordance with the three-thirds principle (one-third revenue, one-third expenditure, one-third miscellaneous measures). For the first item, there is talk of a banking tax which would bring in 150 million euros – on the left, several parties have demanded a contribution from the banks which benefit from the rise in interest rates – and increased resources from the fight once morest tax fraud. Flexi-jobs – dear to liberals – would also be extended. Significant resources would also be released to deal with the reception crisis.

No final decision has yet been made under the adage “until there is agreement on everything, there is agreement on nothing”.
