José Williamspresident of the Congress, ordered this Monday that the session of the Plenary Session of Parliament be resumed only tomorrow, starting at 11:00 am, to return to debate the advancement of elections. As there is no consensus between the benches, this Tuesday it would have to be defined whether or not the project is completed.
Before the session was suspended, the minimum 66 votes were reached for the advancement of general elections to be debated once more in the midst of a great discussion between legislators. The left-wing benches, Renovación Popular and Acción Popular voted once morest the reconsideration.
Early Saturday morning, the Parliament rejected the initiative early elections for this year, with 45 votes in favor, 65 once morest and two abstentions.
As it was a modification to the Constitution, the proposal was required to obtain 87 votes in two legislatures or 66 votes ratified via a referendum.
The opinion presented by Hernando Guerra García, head of the Constitution Commission, indicated that the term of President Dina Boluarte would end on December 31, 2023 for her successor to take office on the first day of 2024 until July 28, 2029.
Dina Boluarte demands Congress
The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, announced this Sunday that if the consensus in Congress for the advancement of elections does not prosper, The Executive Power will present two legislative initiatives for constitutional reform so that the general elections can be finalized this year.
The president’s pronouncement came one day following the violent protests that left the death of a person in downtown Lima. The head of state criticized Parliament for failing to approve an early election despite the claim of citizenship.
Regarding his bill, he maintained that the elections would take place on the second Sunday of October, shortening the term of both the Executive, Congress and the Andean Parliament.
“It is provided that the President of the Republic call general elections for the second Sunday of October 2023. Congress may approve other laws necessary to hold the general elections of 2023, until February 28 of this year, not being of application of the term provided in article 4 of the Organic Law of Elections,” he added.
