Dismantling of the Orange ADSL network: 1,245 municipalities affected in 2026
Announced at the start of 2022, Orange is accelerating the dismantling of its copper network. The objective? Switch to 100% optical fiber by 2030. The operator has just updated the list of municipalities included in lot three of its copper network closure schedule: 2,145 municipalities will no longer be able to subscribe to the operator’s ADSL offer from January 31, 2026. This concerns no less than 2.44 million people, individuals and professionals.
Among this lot threethere are several large cities, including: Rennes, Brest, Dax, Châtillon, the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon, Bourg-en-Bresse, Boulogne-sur-mer, Cagnes-sur-Mer. At the top of the list of departments, we find Mayenne (105 communes), Charente-Maritime (102), Lot (83), Haute-Garonne (80), Nord (78), Corrèze (77), the Loire (74). In Ile-de-France: Yvelines and Val-d’Oise with respectively 43 municipalities concerned. Conversely, other departments asked the operator Orange not to be part of Orange lot three, in particular, Allier, Dordogne, Ger, Lot-et-Garonne, Aveyron , Lozère as well as Côtes-d’Armor and Cantal.
Optical fiber: still uneven deployment and coverage
Replacing ADSL with optical fiber is not just a question of technology; it is also a challenge of coverage and accessibility. Although optical fiber offers significantly higher speed and reliability than ADSL, its deployment is not uniform throughout the territory. According tossociation of Cities and Communities for Electronic Communications and Audiovisual (Avicca), a large majority of municipalities (74%) in Orange’s third dismantling batch benefit from FttH (Fiber to the Home) coverage greater than 98%.
The challenge of deploying optical fiber nevertheless remains significant: more than fifty municipalities have coverage of less than 90% or even less than 50% in certain very dense areas (ZTD). Avicca continues to warn regarding this growing problem: “ This is not for lack of having alerted Orange and the other operators. Both the completeness and the quality of the networks still do not seem to be the priority of these operators, certain communities have decided to take action. A phenomenon which might increase if these actors do not change their approach to these blocking points. »
