NAPLES.- The city of Naples in Italia is on alert after the death of another young man due to a gunshot.
Last Saturday, an 18-year-old young man lost his life after being hit by a bullet from a gun he was playing with in the streets of the Naples Historic Center.
A day later, the victim’s cousin was arrested after confessing that he accidentally fired the gun they were playing with.
This case joins other similar ones in the same Italian city in recent weeks.
There are three deaths from firearms in Naples
From last October 27 to Saturday, November 9, there were five gun attacks in which young people, some teenagers, were involved.
The cases range from accidental incidents to intentional attacks.
On October 27, a 20-year-old young man was shot in the back of the head while driving his vehicle; the victim survived.
A case that ended in tragedy occurred last November 2 in the San Sebastiano del Vesuvius neighborhood in Naples when a 17-year-old teenager murdered another, two years older than him.
The attacker was released from jail last May and shot the 19-year-old after a fight between two groups, allegedly because he dirty his shoes from an accidental stomp.
A week earlier, two teenagers, ages 14 and 17, shot and killed another 15-year-old boy in the city center.
Apology for crime comes to TikTok
These cases have raised alarms about violence in the streets, marginalization and the activity of criminal groups such as the Camorrawhich contribute to the ease with which adolescents are obtaining firearms.
Francesco Borrelli, deputy of Green-Left Alliance coalition which has been protected by escort since 2022, reported that more and more young people identify with crime, and even make altars or other tributes to criminals who have died.
The legislator recalled the case of Luigi Caiafaa 17-year-old minor from the historic center of Naples who died at the hands of the police while committing an attempted robbery in 2020.
After his death, a mural and an altar appeared in his honor.
“Beyond the mural, there was a small altar of devotion, as if it were the Virgin Mary, with the boy’s photo and his things, like a clock,” says Borrelli.
Although the police covered the mural with the young man’s face, there is a graffiti in his memory: “Luigi Cafaia lives”said the Italian.
The deputy regretted that these expressions of admiration for members of crime even reach social networks such as TikTok.
Los altars of the Camorra “Almost all of them were dejected years ago, but the apology moved to social networks, especially TikTok,” Borrelli explained.

How can the potential influence of social media platforms on the normalization of violence among young people in Naples be mitigated?
## Interview with a Naples Resident Regarding Recent Shootings
**Introduction:**
We spoke with Marco Rossi, a long-time resident of Naples, in light of the recent surge in gun violence among young people in the city.
**Journalist:** Marco, the city seems to be reeling from a string of shootings involving young people. What’s the mood like on the streets?
**Marco Rossi:** It’s unsettling, to say the least. There’s a palpable sense of fear and anxiety, especially among parents. No one feels safe anymore. These incidents are happening in broad daylight, in crowded areas. It’s simply shocking.
**Journalist:** We’ve seen reports of several tragic incidents, including accidental shootings and targeted attacks. What are your thoughts on the range of violence?
**Marco Rossi:** It’s frightening to see such a range. The fact that these shootings involve young people, some of whom are teenagers, is particularly disturbing. It suggests a deeper societal issue.
**Journalist:** There have been concerns about the legality and accessibility of firearms in Naples. Do you share those concerns?
**Marco Rossi:** Absolutely. It seems there are too many guns on the streets, and it’s too easy for young people to get hold of them. We need stricter gun control measures to prevent these tragedies.
**Journalist:** Some reports mention the rise of glorification of violence on social media platforms like TikTok.
**Marco Rossi:** It’s another worrying trend.
These platforms can normalise violence and desensitize young people to its devastating consequences. We need to be more vigilant about what our children are exposed to online.
**Journalist:** What would you say to the authorities in Naples?
**Marco Rossi:** They need to act decisively. Enforce stricter gun control laws, crack down on gangs, and invest in social programs to address the underlying causes of this violence. We need a comprehensive approach that prioritises the safety and well-being of our community.
