NAPLES.- The city of Naples in Italia is on alert after the death of another young man due to a gunshot.
Last Saturday, an 18-year-old young man lost his life after being hit by a bullet from a gun he was playing with in the streets of the Naples Historic Center.
A day later, the victim’s cousin was arrested after confessing that he accidentally fired the gun they were playing with.
This case joins other similar ones in the same Italian city in recent weeks.
There are three deaths from firearms in Naples
From last October 27 to Saturday, November 9, there were five gun attacks in which young people, some teenagers, were involved.
The cases range from accidental incidents to intentional attacks.
On October 27, a 20-year-old young man was shot in the back of the head while driving his vehicle; the victim survived.
A case that ended in tragedy occurred last November 2 in the San Sebastiano del Vesuvius neighborhood in Naples when a 17-year-old teenager murdered another, two years older than him.
The attacker was released from prison last May and shot the 19-year-old after a fight between two groups, allegedly because he dirty his shoes from an accidental stomp.
A week earlier, two teenagers, ages 14 and 17, shot and killed another 15-year-old boy in the city center.
Apology for crime comes to TikTok
These cases have raised alarms about violence in the streets, marginalization and the activity of criminal groups such as the Camorrawhich contribute to the ease with which adolescents are obtaining firearms.
Francesco Borrelli, deputy of Green-Left Alliance coalition who has been protected by escort since 2022, reported that more and more young people identify with crime, and even make altars or other tributes to criminals who have died.
The legislator recalled the case of Luigi Caiafaa 17-year-old minor from the historic center of Naples who died at the hands of the police while committing an attempted robbery in 2020.
After his death, a mural and an altar appeared in his honor.
“Beyond the mural, there was a small altar of devotion, as if it were the Virgin Mary, with the boy’s photo and his things, like a clock,” says Borrelli.
Although the police covered the mural with the young man’s face, there is a graffiti in his memory: “Luigi Cafaia lives”said the Italian.
The deputy regretted that these expressions of admiration for members of crime even reach social networks such as TikTok.
Los altars of the Camorra “Almost all of them were dejected years ago, but the apology moved to social networks, especially TikTok,” Borrelli explained.

What are the underlying factors contributing to the rise in gun violence in Naples, Italy, according to Dr. Rossi?
## Naples on Edge: A City Grapples With Gun Violence
**(INTRO MUSIC)**
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Tonight, we’re turning our attention to the escalating gun violence plaguing the historic city of Naples, Italy. In recent weeks, a string of shootings, some accidental, others intentional, has left the community shaken and searching for answers. Joining us tonight is Dr. Maria Rossi, a sociologist specializing in urban youth violence. Dr. Rossi, thank you for being here.
**Dr. Rossi:** Thank you for having me.
**Host:** Dr. Rossi, these shootings seem to be happening with alarming frequency. Can you help us understand what might be driving this surge in violence?
**Dr. Rossi:** It’s a complex issue, and there’s no single answer. We’re seeing a confluence of factors at play here. Economic hardship, social exclusion, and a lack of opportunities for young people can all contribute to a sense of desperation and hopelessness.
In addition, there seems to be a concerning trend of glamorizing violence on social media platforms like TikTok, where these incidents are sometimes celebrated or glorified. This can desensitize young people to the real consequences of violence and normalize it as a way to resolve conflict.
**Host:** You mentioned the case of the 18-year-old who tragically lost his life after being accidentally shot by his cousin while they were playing with a gun in the street. This incident, truly heartbreaking, seems to highlight a lack of awareness about gun safety, particularly among young people.
**Dr. Rossi:** Absolutely.
There’s a dangerous lack of education and awareness around the safe handling and storage of firearms. These guns are often readily accessible, and young people may not fully grasp the potential lethality of these weapons. We need stronger gun control measures, coupled with comprehensive education programs that teach young people about the risks and responsibilities associated with firearms.
**Host:** What can be done to address this crisis? Are there any initiatives or programs that have shown promise in other communities facing similar challenges?
**Dr. Rossi:** Yes, there are community-based interventions that have proven effective in reducing youth violence. These often involve a collaborative approach, bringing together law enforcement, social workers, educators, and community leaders to address the root causes of violence.
Investing in youth programs that provide constructive alternatives, such as mentorship, job training, and conflict resolution skills, can also be crucial in diverting young people away from a path towards violence.
**Host:**
Dr. Rossi, thank you for shedding light on this urgent situation. The escalating gun violence in Naples is a serious concern requiring immediate attention and a multifaceted approach. Hopefully, by understanding the underlying factors and implementing effective interventions, the city can begin to heal and create a safer environment for its residents.
