In 2023, Adobe took its first steps in the field of generative AI with Firefly which has been integrated into several of its products. The company now intends to improve the user experience of the Acrobat and Reader applications with AI Assistant, a new GenAI conversational engine that it launched last Tuesday in beta mode.

AI Assistant is powered by Acrobat Liquid Mode technology, which uses proprietary AI models to provide a deep understanding of the structure and content of PDF documents. It recommends questions based on the content of a PDF and answers questions about the content of the document, all through an intuitive conversational interface.

Better management of long and complex PDFs

The AI assistant in Reader and Acrobat transforms long documents and complex information into useful information and easy-to-understand, actionable content. All kinds of document formats (Word, PowerPoint, meeting transcripts, etc.) can be used.

Thanks to the “Generative Summary” functionality, users get a personalized summary of the document according to their needs.

If the user has questions about the document, they call on the AI Assistant. Citations allow him to easily verify the source of his answers. Additionally, clickable links allow him to quickly find what he needs within the documents, freeing him to focus on exploring and taking action on the most important information. It can also ask AI Assistant to consolidate and format information in key takeaways, email text, presentations, reports, etc. A “copy” button makes it easy to cut, paste and transmit.

All these features, currently only in English, are already available in beta version to Acrobat Individual, Pro and Teams customers as well as Acrobat Pro users and in private beta version for enterprise customers . They will also be available very soon in the Reader application.

Adobe ensures that they respect the security of customer data, and that no customer document content is stored or used for training the AI assistant without consent. The long term goal is to support multiple documents and document types, improve authoring with Firefly, editing and formatting.

“Generative AI delivers the promise of smarter document experiences by transforming information in PDFs into actionable, knowledgeable, professional-looking content. PDF is the de facto standard for the world’s most important documents, and the features introduced today are just the beginning of the value AI Assistant will bring through Reader and Acrobat apps and services.
