Just presented at Adobe Max 2022 Conference Lightroom 2022 The main purpose is to further strengthen the AI masking tool added last year, bringing “select people”, “select objects” and “one-click background selection” options, and add a content-aware repair function to make it easier for everyone to select, Edit or even remove people, objects or backgrounds. Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Adobe Camera RAW can all enjoy these useful features from Photoshop, which I believe will save you a lot of time.

Let’s talk regarding “selecting people” first. This feature uses Adobe’s Sensei AI to detect and select any group, person, or even specific body parts, such as facial skin, body skin, eyes, teeth, lips, hair, etc., and converts it into a mask. How to use it is very simple: After loading the picture, Adobe Sensei will automatically identify and list each person in the picture, such as “Everyone” and “Person 1”, “Person 2”, “Person 3” and so on. After selecting one of them individually, you can further select his body parts for editing. Adobe, for example, can directly brighten eyes, whiter teeth, or darken eyebrows.

“Select Object” is to facilitate everyone to create a mask on the specified object. You can let AI automatically create precise masks by painting on the target object with Brush Select, or painting a rectangle around the object with Rectangle Select.

“One-click Select Background” (One-click Select Background), as the name suggests, is to generate a background mask directly on the entire image, which is much more convenient than the previous mask by inverting the main body.

Need to remove an object (aka “fix” the image)? The newly added Content-Aware Remove feature comes into play. Just draw a random mask around the object you want to remove, and AI can automatically remove and fill in the imperfections. You can also use the “Refresh” option to select the sampling area to improve the accuracy of the repair.

Of course, we can’t guarantee that every image will be perfectly selected, especially if the background is more complex, you may need to manually adjust the mask. Anyway, something is better than nothing, and it will save you a little time in most cases.

Other new features in the new Lightroom for Windows and macOS include a “Compare Mode” that lets you edit two images side-by-side, and a performance boost through GPU acceleration. The new Lightroom Classic also brings the possibility to swap left and right panels, allowing you to further customize your workspace. For Camera Raw, Adobe has added the ability to locally select masking curves and compatibility with HDR displays, although the latter is temporarily available as a technology preview. For those interested, these updates are now available through Adobe’s Creative Cloud.
